Come connect with open science projects being worked on in the Pioneer Valley and around the world. Learn about projects like the Mozilla Science Lab, the Center for Open Science, Public Lab and more. Get advice about applying for open science grants and internships.

7:30 - 9:00pm: Panel

Hear from local leaders in open science, including:

  • Dr. Charles Schweik

    Dr. Charles Schweik is an Associate Professor of Environmental Conservation and Public Policy, as well as a leader in open source geospatial technology. He is the chair of the OSGeo.org’s Education and Curriculum Committee and one of the four leads in the creation of the GeoForAll global network. Schweik is also the lead author on the book Internet Success: A Study of Open Source Software Commons. He recently brought a group of UMass, Mt Holyoke, and Amherst Regional Middle School students to the international Maker Faire in New York City.

  • Dr. Laura Dietz

    Dr. Laura Dietz is one of the founding members of Pioneer Valley Open Science. She is actively involved in the water-quality project "RIFFLE", a collaboration with Public Lab involving Don Blair and Ben Gamari which is aimed at researchers, concerned citizens, and educators. In her work life, she is a post-doctoral Research Scientist in Computer Science working on how to find relevant documents with the help of Wikipedia.
